However, for my patients living with chronic joint pain such as osteoarthritis, this season can also bring an unexpected challenge: managing discomfort related to humidity.

In my practice, I see every day that good preparation is the key to regaining freedom of movement. Understanding how weather changes affect your joints helps you better adapt your habits and fully enjoy the summer season, without staying confined indoors.

Why does humid heat increase joint sensitivity?

It’s not just an impression: changes in barometric pressure (air pressure) that come with heavy, humid days have a direct impact on the body. When atmospheric pressure drops, the soft tissues surrounding the joints (tendons, muscles, and joint capsules) tend to expand slightly.

In someone suffering from osteoarthritis or chronic inflammation, this micro-expansion increases internal tension in the knee or hip, which triggers pain receptors. That’s why managing your joint health isn’t just about clinical treatments, it also involves properly adapting to your environment on a daily basis.

Here are four concrete strategies I recommend to ease this effect and preserve your mobility this summer.

1. Cellular hydration, the lubricant for your cartilage

It’s often forgotten that human cartilage is a highly hydrophilic structure, largely made up of water. This water allows cartilage to maintain its natural shock-absorbing properties with every step.

During periods of intense heat, dehydration reduces the volume of synovial fluid (the joint’s lubricant), which increases direct friction between bones.

The goal: Aim for a steady intake throughout the day, ideally between 2 and 2.5 liters of water.

To limit: Drinks that accelerate fluid loss or stimulate systemic inflammation, particularly alcohol, excess coffee, and beverages high in refined sugar.

2. Cooling your environment to calm the nervous system

Maintaining a stable body temperature helps limit inflammatory spikes. When the humidex rises, the body works harder to regulate itself, which can increase overall fatigue and the perception of pain.

At home: Favor air-conditioned spaces or improve air circulation with fans during the hottest hours of the day (between 11am and 3pm).

Outdoors: Seek the natural coolness of wooded areas or areas near bodies of water. If you’re planning a stationary outing, using a parasol or shaded area is essential to avoid a greenhouse effect on your joints.

3. Gradual warm-up: waking up the joint without straining it

Prolonged inactivity stiffens the limbs, but a sudden effort on a cold joint can cause micro-injuries. Before engaging in physical activity, take time to prepare your anatomical structures.

An effective warm-up consists of gentle passive mobilizations or light stretching, without aiming for performance. Using light supportive braces can also help protect the joint. The key is learning to pace your effort: don’t hesitate to break your activities into segments with regular rest periods, and pay attention to the warning signs your body sends. If pain occurs, don’t push through it.

4. Favor low-impact activities

To maintain your muscle mass and flexibility without overloading your hips or knees, the choice of surface and activity type is crucial.

Aquatic environment: Swimming and aqua fitness remain ideal options. The buoyancy effect frees the joints from body weight, allowing optimal muscle strengthening without any impact.

Adapted walking: Favor dirt or grass trails, which absorb some of the shock wave, unlike asphalt or concrete. Wear shoes with good arch support and, if needed, use walking poles to redistribute load forces.

Gentle activities: Stationary cycling (or low-resistance cycling), raised-bed gardening, and adapted yoga are excellent ways to stay active while protecting your cartilage.

To remember: Chronic pain requires vigilance, but it shouldn’t mean immobility. By combining good hydration, temperature management, and appropriate exercise, you give your body the means to get through the summer comfortably.

While these summer strategies can temporarily relieve humidity-related discomfort, they have their limits when joint wear is advanced. If, despite all your efforts to stay cool and active, pain is ruining your summer and limiting your daily activities, it may be a sign that you need to consider a lasting solution. My goal, through hip or knee replacement, is to give you back true freedom of movement. If you’re ready to take this step, I’d be happy to see you in consultation to assess whether you’re a good candidate for surgery and to plan your return to an active life.

The return of summer in Canada brings plenty of sunshine and opportunities to get moving.
